The dominant faith in Palu, known as The Fold, has woven a narrative that suggests The Mao's forebears were guided to the Reefs by the divine will of their God. According to this doctrine, the Kindred, the ancestors of The Mao, embarked on a celestial odyssey, navigating astral currents and stars, ultimately bringing them to this ethereal realm almost eight centuries ago.

In the wake of The Mao's arrival, the radiant presence of the Divine Beasts graced the Reefs of Palu. This luminous aura purged that which could not thrive in its divine presence, relegating the majority of the Grimalkin, the natives of the reef, to the unfathomable depths of the Abyss. These Grimalkin, resembling The Mao in form yet characterized by a wilder nature, are believed to be distant kin of The Mao. They communicate through the language of bioluminescence, casting an enchanting dance of light and shadow that weaves the intricate tapestry of their existence.
